Overcoming Feeling Helpless
Overcoming Feeling Helpless

It was the middle of the night. All was quiet throughout my place. Laura, my mother-in-law, Sasha and Darren were all passed out. I woke up to feel my left hand aching. I had lost feeling in my fingers.

Day 26: A Day to Rest

After talking with a few friends over video and having my first passive PT session late yesterday, today’s goal was to completely rest with nothing on the agenda. No video chats with friends. No appointments.

Day 25: The First Day of Passive Physical Therapy

I had my first passive physical therapy appointment today. It was painful. It was hard. It was difficult for my arms to move in some of the directions the physical therapist wanted me to move. It was another fear conquered. And it was another step on my road to recovery.

Is Fear Preventing You from Taking the Next Step?
Is Fear Preventing You from Taking the Next Step?

It was early evening and I was standing in the middle of our living room. It was the first time we were going to take my dual shoulder slings off. Earlier in the day we were told by my ortho surgeon’s assistant that I needed to start completing pendulum swings a couple times per day. As we stood there I realized that I was petrified of being out of my slings.

Day 24: Managing Pain Overnight, Staying Comfortable and Catching Up with Friends

Every night I wake up at 12:15a and 4:15a to take pain medication. This is better than the three times per night it was before I switched medications a few days ago. And even better than when I was in the hospital where I seemed to be woken up at least once an hour for medications, vitals, blood draws or any number of other things.

Day 23: Launching Built Unstoppable

Today has been a decent day for pain management thus far with the exception of when I first woke up. Every night I have only kept the blanket up to my waist where I have a pillow for my arms to rest on.

Day 22: Looking Back

Three weeks ago, on August 10, 2014, our entire life changed. After a fairly normal Sunday I was sitting on my couch while Laura was cooking dinner. I only remember a couple seconds of what happened next.

Day 21: Transitioning Pain Medication and Staying Inspired

Last night we changed my pain medication as we try to transition in preparation for the brain surgery. I slept well overnight with no issues but was awoken at 7:30a in the worse pain since coming home. We adjusted the pain meds, ate breakfast and was able to fall back asleep for a while.

Day 20: Doing Pendulum Swings

Doing pendulum swings as part of my shoulder recovery. It always seems easier than it actually is but every time is another step forward in my recovery.

Day 20: Finishing IV Antibiotics Treament

Today was my last day of receiving IV antibiotics treatments - woohoo! After pushing myself hard yesterday I gave myself a day to rest - no walks or running stairs. I'll get back to the exercise tomorrow.

Day 19: Getting Staples Removed

Conquered 21 flights of stairs today but only had time to get in one walk. After seeing my ortho surgeon he wants me to keep up with the exercise but not push it much further. I started working with our insurance companies on a couple of things including our Short Term Disability claim.

Day 18: Starting Pendulum Swings

Increased to 20 flights of stairs yesterday from 15 flights the day previous. Have I mentioned that I despise running stairs?!? My overall step count was a bit lower but that's probably because I didn't have an additional doctor's appointment yesterday as I did on Tuesday. I still did two walks yesterday.

Day 17: Thank You

The generosity and outpouring of support from everyone has been incredible. While there is a long road ahead, your support means more to us than we can express. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Day 17: Using Family as Inspiration

Yesterday I knocked out two walks and pushed myself through an additional 5 flights of stairs. That brought yesterday's total to 3,541 (+410 steps) and 15 flights of stairs (+5 flights). I won't be able to make such sharp increases every day but every day I will push myself to progress in some way.
